34 n Land Animals n Birds Eagles Most people go to Alaska hoping to see a bald eagle, but the truth is, it’s harder not to see them. They’re everywhere. These birds, which can easily weigh more than 20 pounds, were so common in Alaska that, from 1917 until 1952, there was a bounty on them. Hunters were paid as much as $2 per pair for talons. The bounty was put in place on the assumption that eagles ate too many fish. It was discontinued in 1952, when the birds joined the list of federally protected species.

The Sitka pulp mill closed its doors for good in 1993; Wrangell’s saw mill closed in 1995. This is great for the forest, but lousy for the economy of the towns. There is nowhere for the people to turn; fishing has been decreasing throughout Southeast, and that really leaves only tourism. How many t-shirt shops can one small town support?
